EMPHATIC HOOT
This trio of owls arrived in the mail yesterday. I love them! They are my second purchase on Etsy but my first purchase to arrive. Apparently I'm going through an owl phase since the other item I'm waiting for also involves these birds. Would you like to hear some owl sounds?
These little owls were made by craftpaca.
JUST IN FROM NEW YORK
Today we had plans for brunch at Aphrodite's. I've mentioned their chocolate beet cake before and their breakfasts are not to be missed. It would be worth showing up just for their unbuttered toast.
What Emma didn't know was that her friend Shawn MacKinnon had come into Vancouver from New York, just for the day. He showed up at brunch wearing a clown costume and walked by our table and into the next room. Here's what Emma had to say:
"Wait a minute. Did Shawn MacKinnon just walk by? Did that just happen?"
That's right, he arrived at 2am this morning and will be leaving tomorrow afternoon.
And here are the remnants of an 8 person brunch:
THE NEVER ENDING QUILT
This quilt was started over a year ago and until last weekend was living in a plastic bag in my closet. It was originally going to be a queen sized quilt with lots of those jagged looking strips. But at some point I realized that:
- I didn't really have enough fabric.
- I didn't really have enough patience.
And then Trish pointed out that it didn't have to be a queen sized quilt. Brilliant! So I pulled it out over the weekend and reworked it. It's a bit narrower and has less of those strips than I imagined but I'm pretty happy with it. Now I just have to decide on a backing fabric and start quilting. Original estimated finish date: 2015. Revised finish date: 2007. Not bad!

SAFETY FIRST
Trish bought a new bed at IKEA and had it delivered on the weekend. I went over to help put it together. Milo decided the best place to be was under the bath tub. Probably not a bad idea as putting together the bed (according to the IKEA warning labels) could have been dangerous.
Thankfully, no blood was shed and Milo was eventually pulled out from under the tub before we headed off for breakfast.

We were going to eat at Joe's Diner but the line-up was too long and so ended up at Hell's Kitchen. I had the amazing Banana French Toast with walnuts and maple syrup. The sad part was that I had to leave half of it on the plate because it was so filling. Definitely a dish that could be shared.
SKILLS EXCHANGE
I can't quite believe I'm going to say this, but I am now a person who owns a ceiling fan. There's a wall of south facing windows in my apartment which makes the place unbearably hot in the summer. It occured to me that a ceiling fan might be just the thing to help keep my place a bit cooler.
Since I have no electrical wiring skills and no desire to get shocked or burn my building down, I checked with my handyman friend, John, to see if he would be able to install it. He said yes, and in exchange I have baked him some brownies.
I feel cooler already. Thanks John!
